Well here I am again. Coming back into the game and ready for all that the world can bring. Life has taken me on an unexpected journey this past summer, which lead me into a period of deep reflection and self growth. Through it all, I decided to take a break from photography, visual journalism, editing, and pretty much everything that consumed my life. I needed time to step back and figure out what exactly the world means to me and where my place in it is. I can’t say I figured out all my questions or filled in the cracks of my life. I didn’t think I would, but what I did find is that no matter how great a moment or how terrible an experience is, time is running away from all of it. I will never forget the words, “This moment, the present, is the moment.” And the moments I have shared with strangers and friends the last six months will not go unnoticed. They have not been photographed, but their influence will be mirrored in my future work and endeavors.

With that said, I’m ready to finish what I started, what I came to California for, and be open for anything.

….and there’s no better way to kick things off than with a revolution! A movement, that started in front of Wall Street in New York City, has sprouted an influence of protests all around major cities in the U.S.. Occupy Los Angeles started on October 1, 2011 in Pershing Square in Downtown and continued on to City Hall. The protest is continuing on as I type, and they want change. They are the 99% who did not get bailed out from the government, and they want justice from the Corporations. I’m so proud of my generation, and the people who march on peacefully. Here’s how it started in L.A.

Mother’s Day Skid Row

This year I spent Mother’s Day on Skid Row. Why? As a personal piece, I wanted to capture the great work the non-profit group, Red Eye Inc. is doing in the community of Los Angeles. For Mother’s day, they gathered volunteers and sponsors to put together a day to pamper the woman who live in L.A.’s downtown area known as Skid Row by providing mani/pedi’s, makeup, clothing, hair styling, food, and roses. At the end of the pampering experience, the woman chose a word on a sign that they felt empowered them and posed for a picture on the red carpet. This event was an incredibly beautiful initiative to bring happiness to the streets. Yes, it may not provide long-term results, but the simple act of telling a woman she’s beautiful and doing little things to make her feel better about herself is something that becomes rooted in the heart. Yet this is another experience in my life that photography has led me to that has lifted my heart and I shall never forget the people of Red Eye and Skid Row.

New Gallery Image.

The latest gallery that was edited by Shaun Kelly and Jesse Groves for the 5301 workshop last summer was put up in the main building at Brooks Institute this week. Student and teacher photographers gathered together to capture the essence of one of Ventura, California’s most iconic areas, Ventura Avenue. (Also known as “The Ave”) This is my addition: a young girl at her Quinceanera, alone. I feel I can relate to her uncomfortable pose, and the sense of unknown she must feel at this point in her life.

My Family for a Colorado Style 4th of July.

The weather rained and it poured, it hailed, it had tremendous lightning, high winds, and tornado warnings were in the forecast. Yet we still arrived at Palmer Lake in hopes to see fireworks. But as soon as the storm came in, we all got in our cars and headed indoors. Even though most of the state was wiped out in fierce thunderstorms, my family came together and we had a blast.

Lost in California

So I’ve become a disappearing act the last several months here in Southern California. I have completely emerged myself in my work and have allowed myself to flow with the wind and naturally fall into life changing experiences. I have met many new faces, been to strange places, and done things I never thought possible; all of which, changed my life. I do this mostly alone. Not planning things with other people or hanging out with friends forces you to make new friends and try new things. You wait up for no one, and also take your time. These are my recent experiences.

This goes for the sailing, groovephest, things from heaven, pillow fight, Moorpark and Ventura posts.

Give love, be a dreamer, and don’t be too much of a fool to not learn from EVERYONE.
